Frequently asked questions
If your question is not here, write to us.
What does insurance cover when a dietitian is involved?
Less than it covers for therapy. Many plans pay for nutrition counseling only with certain diagnoses or a referral, some not at all, and Medicare only for a few conditions, such as diabetes and some kidney disease. The dietitian partner has her own practice and bills on her own, so ask her office and your plan before a first visit. Dr. Wakefield's sessions are billed separately.
Do you take my insurance?
Verdant is out of network with insurance plans, so you pay the practice directly and can ask your plan to reimburse you. Dr. Wakefield does not bill Medicare or Medicaid. How fees work explains the rest, including a written estimate before you start.
What is a superbill, and how do I use it?
Each month Dr. Wakefield sends an itemized receipt, called a superbill, that you can send to your plan. It carries a diagnosis code, which your plan will see. Your plan decides whether it pays you back and how much.
What is a Good Faith Estimate?
If you pay without insurance, you have the right to receive a written estimate of what your care will cost before you start. Dr. Wakefield gives you one in advance. If a bill is $400 or more above the estimate, you can dispute it. The estimate is not a contract, and you can read more at cms.gov/nosurprises.
How are fees set, and can I use an HSA or FSA card?
You get the fee in writing before you book, and a limited number of reduced-fee sessions are held each month. HSA and FSA cards work for sessions. How fees work has the full answer.
What happens in a first session?
Fifty minutes to say what you want from the work and to hear how Dr. Wakefield works. You choose what to share. Nothing is weighed, measured or counted, and you leave knowing what the next step would be if you want one.
How often will we meet, and for how long?
Sessions are 50 minutes. Dr. Wakefield sets the rhythm with you and does not promise a number of sessions. Many people start weekly and space out as things steady.
Will I be weighed or asked to count anything?
No. Nothing is weighed in session, and you are not asked to count calories or keep a food log you did not choose. If your doctor asks for measurements, they are your doctor's to take.
Do you offer sessions by video?
Yes, in states where we are licensed. Dr. Wakefield is licensed in California, so video sessions are for clients who are in California at the time of the session. Sessions in the office are on Green Street in San Francisco.
What do I do in a crisis?
Call or text 988, any time, or call 911 in an emergency. If you have chest pain, are fainting, or cannot keep food or fluids down, get medical care first. This website is not monitored around the clock. Crisis and resources has more.
What is confidential, and what are the limits?
We keep your records private and share them only as the law allows. The limits, such as a serious risk of harm or the abuse of a child or dependent adult, are explained in your first session, as California law sets them.
What is your cancellation policy, and do you see teens?
Dr. Wakefield asks for 24 hours' notice to cancel or move a session. Verdant sees adults, 18 and over, so teens are not seen here.
